The Gmail Application for Mobile Devices

advertisement

I wrote a while ago about accessing your Gmail account using Opera Mini on a mobile device. Well, Google came out with their our java Gmail application, which is great! I downloaded it OTA on my Blackberry, about 160Kb.

The application loads faster than the browser and it has built-in most of the Gmail menu functions:

  • Gmail Application for mobile (Blackberry)Starred
  • Search
  • Compose Mail
  • Open
  • Refresh
  • Archive
  • Mark as read
  • Add star
  • Report spam
  • Delete

You don’t have to load a web page for each of the actions above, as they are part of the actual application. Really neat!

Note that if you’re using it on a Blackberry, you need to explicitly quit the program by going to Menu > Exit Gmail in order to ensure that Gmail is not running in the background. If you go to your Application or Main Menu without explicitly exiting, the Gmail application will run in the background, periodically checking for new email and using data.

At this point, Google does not support Apps for Your Domain mail accounts.

See the list of supported mobile devices. BTW, the Palm Treo is not a supported device. More Gmail mobile FAQs.
